A little perspective on the road ahead

Posted in Cool Stuff, Video Library for Liberal Escapees on July 5, 2012 by b5blue

Given the challenges before us and the enormity of the fiscal hill at our feet… it’s easy to get discouraged and lethargic in our diligence.   Take time to find a few minutes in song to rekindle the spirit.   Here’s mine.   I simply love this song and the imagery in the video inspires me every time I see it.

Lyrics to Triumph’s ‘Fight The Good Fight’

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we’re running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin’ right from wrong
You got to read between the lines

Don’t get discouraged, don’t be afraid, we can
Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay

The Good Book says it’s better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part
Nothin’ in my pockets I got nothin’ up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart

Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
I am counting on you
You know what you’ve got to do

CHORUS:
Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
It’s your only way

All your life you’ve been waiting for your chance
Where you’ll fit into the plan
But you’re the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can

You think that a little more money can buy your soul some rest
You better think something else instead
You’re so afraid of being honest with yourself
You’d better take a look inside your head

Nothing is easy, nothing good is free
But I can tell you where to start
Take a look inside your heart
There’s an answer in your heart

CHORUS:
Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

Every moment of your lifetime
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay
Yeah

The Concrete Ships of WW1 & WW2

Posted in American History, Cool Stuff on July 4, 2012 by b5blue

A little bit of war trivia.  Background:

During the first World War, steel was becoming scarce. President Woodrow Wilson approved the construction of 24 concrete ships. Of the 24, only 12 were built, at a total cost of $50 million. By the time the ships were completed, the war had already ended.

>snip<

Just as steel had become scarce during the First World War, the Second World War was again consuming the country’s steel resources. In 1942, the United States Maritime Commission contracted McCloskey and Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to build a new fleet of 24 concrete ships. Three decades of improvements in concrete technology made this new fleet lighter and stronger than its WWI predecessors.

Click around over there.   Very cool history.

Passengers beat the hijackers to death in China.  Drop the hammer, drop the desire to commit wrong.

I’m preparing to spend the rest of the week with my boys at the beach.  I’ll stick my slightly tanned nose in here this week…. but not much.

Have a great week.

This photo montage of the ingenuity put forth is worth the three minutes.  Plus I like McCartney & Wings.  So there.
