Who are the reformers and progressives now?

….yes, indeed.  Click on my magic carpet and ride over to visit Libby Sternberg.

Juicy part:

Both the Homestead Act and the Morrill Act were blocked by Southern Democrats. In those faraway times, they were the ones with the stick-in-the-mud reputations. They, not Republicans, were the Abominable No-Men.

I would argue that, in many ways, they are again today the blockers of real reform. Republicans are the ones championing fixes to Social Security and Medicare in order to make them sustainable. Republicans are the ones pushing education reforms that include a complete overhaul of a root-bound system.

The fact that some of them call themselves ‘progressive’ is the pinnacle of irony.
